Santorini
Santorini (also known as Thira) is a unique island. Around 1450 BC a huge volcanic eruption completely destroyed the island of Santorini. A large part of it sank in the depths of the Aegean Sea. When volcano erupted, a greater part of the island sunk forming today’s caldera, the largest of its kind. All that left in the surface were segments of its perimeter which today consist Santorini, Thirasia, Aspronisi, Palea (Old) Kameni – Hot springs and Nea (New) Kameni or Volcano.
The island of Santorini has been inhabited since the prehistory and today, many are those who like to connect its ancient civilization and the story of the volcanic eruption to the legend of Atlantis. Due to the eruption, which is historically connected to the downfall of the Minoan civilization in Crete, the large central part of the island submerged into the sea and Santorini and its Caldera as we know them were formed. The volcano has left its trace in every part of Santorini, from the impressive tall rocks surrounding its beaches, to the black, red, and white colors of the sand and the pebbles, to the rich volcanic soil that produces vegetables, fruit, and wine of excellent quality. What was a destructive explosion eventually became a source of life and unique color for the island, and today Santorini is famous not only for the explosion that changed it forever, but also for the amazing views one can enjoy from the Caldera, the quality of its agricultural products, and the Cycladic architecture which finds, here, it’s most characteristic expression.
Due to its unique formation, the dazzling beaches and the cosmopolitan character as well as the picturesque villages and its spectacular sunset, the island of Santorini is one of the most popular holiday and honeymoon destinations in Greece as well as in the world.
